Driving Back to Sport – Pilot sessions Round-Up
20 February 2012

Snowfall, freezing temperatures and heavy downpours failed to dampen the enthusiasm of budding carriage drivers taking part in 'Driving Back to Sport.'

The participants braced challenging weather at venues in Devon Nottinghamshire, Essex and Cheshire determined to fulfil their dreams of learning how to drive a carriage. Only one of the four pilot events, in Cheshire, fell victim to the extreme weather and had to be postponed following heavy snow.

The team of coaches across the venues worked together to shape each introductory session, providing workshops on all aspects of carriage driving from cones to dressage, and even a chance for everyone to take the reins and drive a carriage for the first time!

The vast majority of applicants who attended the initial sessions signed up to continue for the remaining four coaching days. Project manager Anne Clarke of Instinctive PR is thrilled with the programme’s success: “The launch of Driving Back to Sport couldn’t have gone better. The coaches have been amazing at delivering superb sessions, each venue has seen a fantastic bunch of participants, and everyone is looking forward the remaining sessions. We feel we have successfully introduced a huge number of new faces to the sport of carriage driving, and are set to increase that number with our upcoming courses in Kent and Yorkshire."

Participants at each venue - Fenix Carriages in Devon, Bennington Carriages in Nottinghamshire and Adlington Equestrian Centre in Cheshire and Ashfields Carriage & Polo Club – clearly enjoyed the sessions, with a feedback session gleaning comments such as:

"An opportunity like this just never comes up. I have had such a fun day and have thoroughly enjoyed learning so much from the coaches. Getting the chance to actually drive a carriage was just brilliant."

“I couldn’t sleep last night because I was looking forward the course so much. At at my age, I didn’t think I did ‘excited’ anymore!”
