New Sponsor for National Championships Leading outdoor and travel brand Craghoppers is to be the principal sponsor of this year’s National Championships at Windsor from 12th to 14th September. This sponsorship is a culmination of years support by Craghoppers for the BHDTA. The photograph below shows BHDTA Council Member and Chairman of Marketing & Publicity Committee John Gaynor with Jim McNamara, Managing Director of Craghoppers. Craghoppers was first established in 1965 in Batley, West Yorkshire, before being bought by the Black family (owners of Regatta Great Outdoors) in 1995. With over 30 years experience in producing high quality, technical outdoor clothing, Craghoppers have produced clothing for hill walkers and mountaineers and more recently have been positioned in the forefront of the travel and outdoor wear market focusing on innovation, style and comfort. BHDTA Chairman Tom Pettifer said, "We are delighted to welcome Craghoppers as title sponsor and are most grateful for their support of Horse Driving Trials. Their generosity will assist in ensuring that the National Championship is an event worthy of the name." For more information, visit the Craghoppers website www.craghoppers.comMailing In order to save money for the Association, only one mailing per household will be despatched. But if members wish to receive additional paperwork, particularly the Year Book, the office will be pleased to send it out. The Carriage Driving Sports Group The Carriage Driving Sports Group for drivers with disabilities is hoping to organize another training session in the Spring at the Unicorn Trust, Stow on the Wold, Glos. Drivers of all abilities who would like some coaching in Dressage, Cones and Obstacles are very welcome, as also are RDA A.B. Whips who wish to improve their own skills in order to help their drivers. Occasionally sensible ponies are needed for drivers who don't have their own turnouts and any drivers offering their ponies will be able to join in the sessions and will find that their ponies will benefit from instructions from top trainers. It is hoped that the group may be able to put on courses in different parts of the country if any clubs are prepared to offer their facilities and some help. If anyone is interested in joining the group, attending a course or helping in any way, please contact Margaret Brockie on 01204 531301 or Email to: margaret@mbrockie.freeserve.co.uk ‘Bit by Bit’ - A training video directed by Clare Wigmore & Di Hayes This video has been produced to help single drivers improve the way their horse goes. It identifies some common faults found in the driving horse or pony, including bending, paces, on the forehand, above the bit and resistance. The video then demonstrates how to make progress towards correcting them. Clare and Di also include a number of tips on driving techniques. The video is available from the Carriage Driving Magazine at £19.95 plus £2.75 p & p. Running time 35 mins. First Aid Course The BHS are running a One-Day Refresher Equestrian-Related First Aid Course at The Unicorn Trust on 9th May 2003. Full details from Sarah Beveridge at 01926 707820 or s.beveridge@bhs.org.uk. South of England Carriage Driving Fair The hard working team at Brockham Harness Club are busy putting together the 7th South of England Carriage Driving Fair which will take place at Ardingly,West Sussex on Sunday 23rd March. Building on the success of previous years, the programme includes a combination of thrilling competition, instructional and informational displays and sheer entertainment that covers all aspects of carriage driving. Main arena attractions, which run all day, involve top names in the sport today, including the international horse team competition, Gary Docking’s famous “suck it and see hour”, ponies in action, Western Riding, Dressage to music, heavy horse power, Scurry competition, North -v- South Junior Challenge, Coaching, Trade turnouts, Private Driving and hackneys in action! Every visitor has the chance to win the top prize in the grand draw…..the ultimate starter kit! - Everything you need to get you going - you just need £1 for the ticket . This wonderful prize has been kindly donated by J Martin Johnson of Bellcrown Carriages and contains a Bellcrown carriage, Tedex harness, driving whip, Liverpool bit, book and video; and as a bonus, triple European pony team champion Georgina Frith has offered a series of training sessions to make this a fantastic first prize! Also with the forthcoming Pony World Championships in Austria later this year, the pony classes will be using the fair to launch their various fundraising activities, so please come and help them to get the gold. Brockham Harness Club supports the sport throughout the year with the proceeds . To order advance tickets, draw tickets or for details call 01483 276936 or visit www.brockhamharnessclub.co.uk Georgina Frith promoting Pony World Championships Georgina Frith will have a change of scenery when she competes with a pony coach at some shows this season (see article on page 6 about Junior Clinics for details of New Forest Show). She would also like to use it to raise the profile of ponies and if possible raise some funds for the British team going to the World Championships at Karlstetten. If anyone has any ideas to help with this promotion, Georgina would be very pleased to hear from them - GeorginaFrith@aol.com. Georgina tells us that her new Connemara team are destined for America in 2004. She will be driving them during 2003 and doing her best to get selected for the World Championships. Lisa Stroud has other Connemaras in the USA and she is largely responsible for getting Georgina “hooked” on them! Lisa will be trying to qualify for the US Team at the Worlds with a pair. To that end she may well be competing at some British events this season. Georgina also has a team of black hackney cobs waiting in the wings who might make an appearance after the Worlds, but our horse team drivers will be relieved to hear that her focus this year is firmly on ponies! Scottish Carriage Driving Association I n November the Scottish Carriage Driving Association's annual conference was held in Perth. The meeting was well attended and included the presentation of rosettes and trophies to the Scottish Points League winners. The single pony class was very close with a tie for first place between Audrey Barron and Sanchia May with Sandy Coupar only 1 point behind. Nicola Craigen won the single horse class. Vivienne Rome and John Farmer shared the spoils in the pairs class while Faith Szczuka's tandem were victorious in the multiples section. A raid came from south of the border and Brenda Hodgson took home the small pony trophy. Janet Pilling, in her first season of competition, was a clear winner of the Newcomers class and Amanda Saville's crowd of young drivers competed in an enthusiastic manner all year with Hazel Carruthers eventually emerging victorious in the junior section. In January two SCDA members, Ian Bertram (a very successful single horse driver) and Catriona Wilson, were married in Glasgow University Chapel on a sunny but very chilly Tuesday afternoon (see photo below). Many friends were invited to join their celebration and dancing took place well into the night. In February the AGM will be held at Oatridge Agricultural College. In the morning, international judge Diana Brownlie will give members the benefit of her experience when assessing paces of various horses and ponies. Videos will be used to demonstrate a wide variety of turnouts and members will be able to gain a clearer understanding of what the judge is looking for. After lunch and the formal business there will be a panel discussion with a judge, a course builder and a competitor available to answer members' questions. The Omnibus Schedule of Scottish Points events will be available at the AGM to fully paid up members This gives details of forthcoming clinics as well as dates of events and a wealth of other information. We are exceptionally pleased to be returning to St. Fort this year for a club event which will no doubt prove to be extremely popular. We are looking forward to welcoming many visitors from south of the border to our two Scottish National events at Hopetoun and Castle Kennedy. Both are in particularly scenic venues and well worth the drive. We are delighted to have secured sponsorship from Bellcrown Carriages for the Scotia Cup to be awarded to the driver with the highest combined placings from the two events. See page 7 (Important Competitor information) for more details. Ian Gilbert, course builder for Hopetoun, has the new dressage arena ready to use and will be building all eight obstacles in the same field, removing the steep climb to Obstacle 3 which has previously daunted a few competitors. We wish everyone a successful season in 2003. Brockham Harness Club New Venue The very popular August two-day event that includes a novice qualifier will be held at Borde Hill in West Sussex on 30/31 August 2003. The club is very excited at the prospect of running an event in such a wonderful location. Course builder Andrew Simmons is already hard at work designing the course which hopefully will include two water obstacles. The clubs two-event has always attracted a full entry and this year no doubt will see an early request for schedules. A jazz party in front of the house with a lakeside setting on Saturday night is just one of the attractions that will be on offer at this event, so keep in touch by logging on to www.brockhamharnessclub.co.uk “The No. 1 Challenge” As a result of the success of last year’s South of England Carriage Driving Fair, Brockham Harness Club are again organising the “No. 1 Challenge”. At every National Driving Trials during 2003, the Club will present a limited edition driving cap and rugby shirt, specially commissioned for the Fair, to the fastest competitor through Obstacle No. 1 on the marathon – in a different class at each event. Full details available at each event and on www.brockhamharnessclub.co.uk Chairman’s Notebook As we move into springtime our programme of Clinics and Conferences is well under way, so by the start of the National Event season all should be well prepared. Club reports indicate full programmes and it is hoped that they will find the Clubs Liaison Committee a useful forum for the exchange of ideas and information. You will see from the Council news that George Bowman is not seeking re-election for a further term. After 24 years on the HDT Committee/Council, he deserves the rest, and the grateful thanks of members countrywide and Internationally for his work on behalf of our sport. Since I became Chairman in October 2001, George’s support and advice as Vice Chairman has been invaluable. Breaking news is of course, Craghoppers sponsorship for the National Championships, a most welcome development enabling us to enhance the quality of the event. Special thanks to John Gaynor for identifying and securing the arrangement and we look forward to a successful partnership in the future. However, we must not rest on our laurels; further obstacle and service sponsors are required so if you have any suggestions, please contact John or Nigel Dipple. A full season lies ahead, particularly for those seeking selection for one of the World Championships. Please take careful note of the qualifying and selection requirements outlined in this Newsletter to avoid difficulties and disappointments later. Good Luck to those endeavouring to make the teams and an enjoyable 2003 to you all.Council Election There are four vacancies in the forthcoming election. Three of the retiring Council members, Ian Douglas, Edmund Goodwin and Sydney Smith have indicated that they are prepared to stand again, but George Bowman has decided to stand down (see Chairman’s Notebook, left). One additional nomination was received - from Tom Pettifer - who for the last two year’s has been a co-opted member of Council. Although there are four vacancies, one of these is for a term of one year only. An election would therefore have been necessary to determine which candidate should fill this one-year vacancy. However, Sydney Smith has requested to serve for one year only and has asked to fill this vacancy. On this basis the reappointment of these Council Members will be put to the membership for ratification at the AGM. BHDTA AGM The BHDTA AGM will be held at 6.00 pm on Thursday 1st May 2003 at Brighton. This will be followed by a Members' Open Meeting. Amendments to Year Book BHDTA COUNCIL (Page 5) John Gaynor has changed his email address to: JOHN@windermere.fsnet.co.uk. CLUB LIAISON COMMITTEE (Page 7) Due To ill-health, Anthony Cooper has temporarily stood down from the Club Liaison Committee. We wish Anthony a speedy recovery, and in the meantime his place on the committee has been taken by Mrs Barbara Nadin whose telephone number is 01823 461189. Tel: 0117 961 1009, Fax: 0117 967 2822, Email: michael.wall5@btopenworld.com Three Counties Harness Club (Hertfordshire) was disbanded in December due to lack of support and the remaining money held by the club was donated to Driving for the Disabled. Possible Sports Council Funding We are informed by Sport England that although there is no funding available for the BHDTA as the national governing body, there is a possibility that some clubs may be eligible under their “Awards for All” scheme, which is aimed at small groups with a community focus. For more details, see the website www.awardsforall.org.uk Child Protection Update The BHDTA Child Protection Officer (Janis Moore) has already been busy on our behalf. Janis travelled down to the latest Council meeting when the outlines for the policy and procedures were discussed and agreed. Janis is busy preparing a 'pack' which, when ready, will be circulated to Event Organisers and Clubs. You will find enclosed with this newsletter a 'Self Disclosure Form' together with a letter outlining the reasons for completing it. In the next newsletter there will be a full report from Janis on the way forward, the official requirements and how they affect us all. We understand that people may be anxious about the introduction of child protection procedures within our sport. Please be reassured that these procedures will be straightforward and common sense applied. Only where it is deemed appropriate will a referral be made. The methods of training children and young people do not need to change in any way whatsoever. BHDTA clinics The full list of clinic dates is given on page 67 of the Year Book. BHDTA YOUNG DRIVERS CLINICS Sponsored by The Saddlers Company and Baileys Horse Feeds The BHDTA Training Committee has arranged three Clinics for Young Drivers in 2003. Thanks to the generous support from the Saddlers’ Company and Baileys Horse Feeds the cost of running these sessions has been largely subsidised, making them affordable to most. There may also be a discretionary grant available to BHDTA members to assist with travel costs for those coming long distances, and anyone who feels they may qualify should apply to the BHDTA Office. Participants do not have to have their own turnout because the 'Buddy' system has proved very successful. All vehicles must only be ridden by the number of people for which they are designed. One January evening in 1988 Neil Swanson invited a group of carriage drivers, fed up with driving on their own, to a meeting, with the object of starting a driving club. After a meal and some lively discussion the White Horse Harness Club was born, a Chairman and Secretary elected and the committee formed. Those present were: Cathy Cochran; Pam Groves; Mandy Fisher; Andy Marshall; Carol Parry; Alan Rutledge (Chairman), Andrea Rutledge, Neil and Karin Swanson (Secretary), Susan Tuckey and Roger Upton. The WHHC went from strength to strength most of the groundwork being done by Susan Tuckey, our longest serving Chairman and it is largely due to her efforts that the Club is what it is today. On 26th January the WHHC will be 15 years old and is rated amongst the top driving clubs in the country holding training week-ends, Inside-Out events to introduce newcomers to competition driving, as well as full one and two day events at prestigious venues such as Barbury Castle, Highclere Castle, the Manton Estate and the 2002 venue - West Overton, Nr Marlborough to which they will be returning for their Club Championships and National Novice Qualifiers on 26th/27th July 2003. Social Meetings for the White Horse Harness Club are
held on the last Thursday of January, February and March
in the lovely surroundings of the Three Horse Shoes at
Milton Lilbourne, near Pewsey (where the cuisine is
excellent). There will be a guest speaker at each evening
and all are welcome. South Downs Harness Club S.D.H.C.
The South Downs Harness Club is celebrating its Silver Jubilee in 2003. Lincolnshire Driving Trials Group T he Lincolnshire Driving Trials Group looks forward to welcoming new and existing members to all of its events this year. The season starts with an informal social evening on Saturday, February 8 with guest speaker Bill Ginns at Hackthorn Village Hall, nr Lincoln. This is followed by a dressage day at Thorpe Grange Equestrian Centre, nr Lincoln, on February 20, kindly organised by Elisabeth Greensmith (01623 811482). Forty-minute dressage lessons will be with former tandem champion, Colin Allen and places are limited - other Clubs' members welcome to apply.A full list of dates will be on the hdt.diary.org.uk website but the club is also hoping to hold a clinic for budding course builders, stewards and scorers at Beelsby on 29 March, just prior to a training day for drivers on the Sunday. New venues are being investigated, with Charity rides/drives used to 'test the water'. LDTG are also pleased to be associated with MDTG and EACDG in three-way inter-club competitions - each club to host an event - but open to other club drivers to also compete. All LDTG events are open to other club drivers - please come and join us - you'll be surprised just how many hills there are in 'flat' Lincolnshire!! Further information is available from Linda Turner LDTG Secretary on 01623 512729 or Email to: genesis10@supanet.com. Midlands Driving Trials Group - Thoresby Park 2003 Elisabeth Greensmith of the Midlands Driving Trials Group is already working on the Groups first major event of the year. Thoresby Park (near Mansfield, Notts) takes place on the 26-27 April and will be the first of only two group events carrying a three star ranking. The event will also host a National Novice Qualifier. If you are looking for early competition then this is the event for you with pony and horse classes for every combination from novice to team driver. The three section marathon course is mainly on estate roads and forest tracks and the obstacles will include one with water. Competitors and stewards who have experienced Thoresby keep coming back for more. However, newcomers to the event are warned that the weather can be a challenge at the end of April meaning that the kit, including you, generally needs to be proof against both wind and rain! We are delighted to say that the Estate are again allowing us the use of the indoor riding school to host the excellent hot supper on the Saturday evening, similar to the one that we enjoyed last year. Events are open to non members at a surcharge on the entry fees provided they satisfy MDTG insurance requirements. Membership details and schedules can be obtained from the membership secretary: Lesley West tel: 01630 661314 e mail: jodders@lineone.net, or consult the club’s website - www.mdtg.co.uk. Windsor Park Equestrian Club Th e season will start with a members’ driving training day on Sunday 23rd March on Smith’s Lawn. Simultaneously, the club will hold a training day for stewards, whether members of the club or not - all will be welcome. The fact that five of the seven competitors who attended the World Single and Team Driving Championships in 2002 were members of the club has provided an impetus to upgrade five of our permanent obstacles, hopefully before the season begins properly with the first two-day meet taking place on 5th and 6th April. With the rumoured demise of two local driving clubs, it will be even more important for the club to attract more dressage judges and driving stewards.
