Submitting material to the BHDTA website

We are always on the look-out for new articles, stories, event reports and photographs. It will help us greatly and speed up the process of converting your submissions to web page format it you can follow some basic guidelines.

Please note that any material you submit for publication should be related to the sport of Horse Driving Trials. Your article must contain full details about the event / subject. Please give as much information as possible and always give a contact phone number and email address. Please be aware that any requests along the lines of  "Just put something on the website about ..." or "Can you mention that ..." will not be sufficient. We need the actual words that you want us to publish. Please check the accuracy of the information you send. Although we will proof-read the material before publication, we cannot undertake to correct any errors we don't know about.

General submissions - format

Any submissions to the website are preferred in electronic form, i.e. by email. This saves a lot of time not having to re-type everything and eliminates errors. Please try to avoid sending scans of printed pages - these take a long time to transcribe and errors are likely to creep in.

If you cannot use email, or the article or picture is too big, we are quite happy to accept it on CD. Please see our postal address at the bottom of this page.

As a last resort, if your item is only available in paper form, you can post it or fax it to us on the address and number shown below. Please beware that because of the poor legibility of faxes, the error rate is high and there may be a delay while we get the text transcribed.

Articles, news items etc.

Text articles can be sent in any of the common formats. We can accept the following:

  • Microsoft Word document (doc or docx)
  • Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (xls or xlsx)
  • Rich text file (rtf)
  • Plain text (txt)
  • Web page format (htm)
  • Microsoft publisher (pub)
  • Forwarded email (eml)
  • Open Office document (sxg, sxw)

Adobe Acrobat PDF files

We can accept PDF files, but these can only be published on the web "as-received". Converting these files to web page format is time-consuming, so we cannot undertake any correction or formatting.

Event Results

If you use the Driving scoring software by Philippe Lienart, please send us the HTML files, which can be output by selecting "Results ... External Files ... HTML format". We can upload these directly to the website with minimum alteration or delay.

If you use an Excel-based scoring program, please send the Excel sheet with the final results. We will convert this to PDF format, which will be published on the website.

Photographs

We prefer photographs from a digital camera.

If digital pictures are not available, we can accept prints on paper, which we can scan and return them to you if you wish them back, however the quality will not be as good at with digital pictures and it will take longer to get them published on the website.

Digital photographs

We require photographs at the best possible resolution. This enables us to maintain maximum quality of pictures on our website. Please send pictures at the same resolution as they come out of your camera. We will do the necessary cropping and re-sizing.

Please ensure that any pictures you submit are identified with the following:

  • Name of the person in the photograph
  • The name or location of the event
  • The date of the event
  • The name of the photographer

If we do not receive the above information, we may not be able to publish your pictures.

Ideally, we would like the file-name of your picture to be in the following format:
photographer's initials _ name of driver.jpg   (Example: tb_george_bowman.jpg which is photo of George Bowman, taken by T.B.). Please replace any spaces with the underscore character or a dash. This makes if easier and faster for us to upload your pictures to the website.

Due to time and space constraints, we have to impose a limit of 10 photographs per contributor per event. Please select your best 10 pictures. If you send more, we will not make a selection for you - we will just publish the first 10. You can, of course, send fewer than 10 pictures.

Picture formats

The preferred format for pictures is JPG. If you are saving a picture as a JPG, please use the maximum or best quality setting (or minimum compression). If possible please send the original picture from the camera, which we will be able to process to make it suitable for displaying on a web page.

Old photos

If you have old archive photographs of historical interest, we are able to produce high quality scans of these and return the originals to you. Please remember that we still need you to identify the people in the picture, the event location and the date and any additional text or description along with old photos would be most welcome.
