Pony Put Down After Theft at Langford
August 13 2009

Biggleswade Police are seeking help from the public after an horrific incident involving two ponies that were stolen late last night/early hours of Thurs 13th August.

The ponies were in their field at Edworth Road, Langford, when they were loaded into a horsebox stolen from elsewhere and towed away. It is likely they were towed through Dunton on the B1042, as the horsebox was found at Croydon in Cambridgeshire near the A1198.

A passing motorist called police at 12.20am, as he had come across the horsebox abandoned in the road. The wooden bottom of the green metal-sided trailer had collapsed during the journey as it was rotten and one of the ponies was still inside trapped by a badly injured leg through the floor.

The fire service, vet and RSPCA were called to the scene also, but the three year old black pony, called Annie, had to be destroyed immediately as the injuries were too severe to save her.

The other pony, a brown and white mare called Jaylu, had run away when the trailer was abandoned, but was fortunately was caught nearby unhurt. She has now been returned to her owner.

PC Becky Wayland, based at Biggleswade police station, is anxious to hear from anyone who was driving along the B1042 in the early hours of this morning and may have seen the trailer moving along or recognises where it comes from.

“The thieves have not only committed a crime by stealing the horses, they have callously just unhitched the trailer when the bottom collapsed and driven off, leaving one of the ponies trapped and in terrible pain. Annie’s owner is understandably distraught about what has happened,” said PC Wayland.

“I’m hoping someone might have been the trailer being towed at such a late hour and thought it was unusual enough to remember it. We’d like to hear from you if you saw it on the road, saw it being abandoned, or if you know where this trailer has been stolen from. It has the words Ambers Tressure stencilled on the inside, which could be the name of a horse belonging to the trailer’s owner,” she said.

Anyone who can help should contact PC Wayland on 01234 841212, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Pairs marathon carriage

Stolen on 22 May 2009 from Reading - a dark blue pairs marathon carriage with pale blue lining (this has been over-sprayed in a few areas). A pair of galvanised shafts with black spray on were also stolen that fit it, but the spanner to remove the pole base is specialised & they didn't get that, so they might not be able to remove the pole-fitting easily.

Black vinyl seats and silver-galvanised foot-plates & double-tiered backstep. The rear seats lift up to open 2 storage areas at the back. It has adjustable delayed steering and an adjustable sprung drivers seat. There is a turntable brake that operates from under the vehicle. It has 2 brake pedals (without any rubbers on) and the front brake pads have been removed.

A full size Zilco Empathy collar with ring-end traces and quick-release fittings on the collar were also taken, plus a ex-large galvanised dog cage.
